A Town Like Gladstone
Gladstone
is an Australian industrial city located on the
spectacular Queensland coast. It is about 550 kilometres
by road north of Brisbane and 100 kilometres southeast
of Rockhampton. The city is situated between the
Calliope River to the north and the Boyne. Between the
two river mouths lies the deep-water harbour for which
the city owes its existence and its burgeoning
prosperity.
Best known for its strong industrial base, the Gladstone
Region is also one of the most attractive holiday
destinations in Queensland. The Region boasts some of
the most spectacular coral on the Southern Great Barrier
Reef, golden beaches, great fishing and national parks.
The Gladstone Region stretches from the Southern Great
Barrier Reef of the Miriam Vale Shire, to the hinterland
of the Banana Shire in the west, encompassing the
growing area of Calliope Shire and the major population
base of Gladstone City, and is home to over 62,000
people. Like most of Australia, Gladstone suffers from a
skills shortage. Thus, its growing industrial base
creates excellent opportunities for the employee and
investor. Gladstone’s major industries include:
- Boyne Smelters Limited
- Cement Australia
- NRG Gladstone Operating Services
- Queensland Alumina Limited
- Rio Tinto Alcan – Yarwun
Gladstone is also set for further growth via the
development of LNG facilities, among other planned
industrial projects.
Gladstone has several primary schools three high schools,
(Gladstone State High, Toolooa State High and Chanel
College), and one university campus, Central
Queensland
University. It is also home to CQIT (TAFE) Gladstone
Campus.
