Relocating to Australia
Becoming a citizen
There is no pressure to become an Australian citizen.
But Australian citizenship does symbolise our unity as a
nation. It represents a commitment to Australia and its
people, the values we share and our common future.
Many immigrants are eager to become citizens; others
prefer to retain the citizenship of their home
countries. Migrants can apply for Australian citizenship
by conferral under either of these categories:
Conferral - General eligibility
Conferral - Other situations
Conferral - General eligibility
Most people are required to pass a test and meet general
eligibility requirements before applying for Australian
citizenship by conferral.
Overview of the citizenship test
If you have already sat and passed the test, you must
meet the general eligibility requirements for Australian
