How far can a migrant go? Jac Nasser: International businessman
Jac Nasser was born in 1947 in Amyoun, Lebanon. He
migrated to Australia with his family at the age of four
and was raised in working-class Northcote. He graduated
in business at RMIT University, Melbourne and has an
honorary Doctorate of Technology.
His career with the Ford Motor Company, which spanned 33
years, started at its Broadmeadows factory, on
Melbourne’s northern fringe. After a stint overseas, in
1989 he was posted back to Australia to take charge of
Ford’s Australian operations.
He went on to become president and CEO of the Ford Motor
Company in 1999.
While at Ford, he created the company’s Premier
Automotive Group, which included European brands Jaguar,
Land Rover and Volvo. He led the acquisition of Volvo’s
car unit in his first year in the top job, and BMW’s
Land Rover unit in 2000. He had a strong focus on global
competitiveness, closer connections to the consumer and
on ‘‘tough but necessary restructuring’’.
Jac is also a Partner of One Equity Partners, the
private equity arm of JP Morgan, a Director of British
Sky Broadcasting and sits on the International Advisory
Board of Allianz A.G.
Recently he was chosen to replace Don Argus as chairman
of the world’s biggest resources group, BHP Billiton.
He holds joint Australian and US citizenship and speaks
Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese.
In recognition of his work for industry, as an adviser
to government, and for education in the area of
technology, he was awarded an Order of Australia and a
Centenary Medal. Jac was also awarded the Order of the
Cedar from Lebanon. In 2008 he received the Ellis Island
Medal of Honor for outstanding contributions to American
Society.
