A Town Like Goondiwindi
Goondiwindi (pronounced GUN-dah-WINDY) sits by the
MacIntyre River in Queensland near the New South Wales
border, 350 kilometres south west of Brisbane, the state
capital. The municipality covers 19,294 square kms
includes the towns of Goondiwindi, Inglewood, Texas,
Yelarbon, Toobeah, Bungunya and Talwood and has a
population of approximately 10,720.
The economy of the area and its attractive prospects are
based in several factors:
- A diversity of natural resources and rural production.
- The scope for value-added production and even export
potential.
- Excellent prospects for eco-tourism and other tourism
opportunities.
- Goondiwindi's central positioning as hub of strong
rural growth.
In big cities, increasing pressure,
restrictions and costs on business and industry will
force many businesses to explore the economic and
lifestyle advantages of towns like Goondiwindi.
In 2004 the racehorse Gunsynd ‘the Goondiwindi Grey’,
was listed as one of the top 12 Queensland Icons. In
2005 he was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of
Fame. Gunsynd became a sporting immortal because he was
purchased for just $1,200 by 4 mates who hoped he might
win a race on the local Goondiwindi track. Gunsynd did
rather better. He became the champion of his era winning
racing classics including The Cox Plate, The Doncaster,
The Epsom, The George Adams and the Toorak in the one
season. Up to the present time, he’s the only horse to
achieve this record.
Opened in 2007, the Gunsynd Museum is a tourist
highlight in Goondiwindi.
