Staff Profile
Name: Grant Frankcombe
Position: Senior Migration Advisor
My role: To lead the migration services team and
ensure that a high standard of service is being provided
to all our clients.
You lived in Amsterdam for several years. What were the
highlights?
I actually lived in Utrecht and worked in Amsterdam
for just under 10 years. Living and working in the
Netherlands was fantastic and the highlights were many.
The opportunity to experience a different culture and
lifestyle is something that I think that gives you a
much greater understanding of the world. It really
expands your horizons. I made many friends through
playing cricket with Kampong Cricket Club and this was
definitely a highlight, especially the year we won our
league championship. Just getting the opportunity to
visit many other parts of Europe was also a real
highlight. I also now know the difference between a
pannekoek and a poffertje!
Why did you decide to return to Australia?
I have two young daughters and we just felt that the
open spaces and warmer climate would make Australia a
better place to bring them up. Holland is very crowded
and wherever you go there are usually queues and entry
fees involved. Living in Melbourne means that we can
work in the city and then get away on the weekends to
national parks and great beaches that are nearby. It’s
so easy to get away from it all. The kids love the
nature and are able to play outside a lot more.
In every sport, there is always one team that everyone
dislikes, unless you support them yourself. Why do you
support the Collingwood Football Club?
My father is a Collingwood supporter and although
he’s now in his 70’s we still get to go to an occasional
game together. I remember when I was young my
grandmother gave me a photograph of the 1953 premiership
side and a great uncle still lives in Collingwood. So
it’s always been a family thing and my daughters are now
getting involved and I have taken them to a couple of
games recently and they just love it. While it’s true
that many people dislike Collingwood, we understand that
being biggest and most famous club in Australia, and one
of the most successful, makes us the envy of many
opposing fans.
What do you love most about Australia?
I love the relaxed lifestyle and the climate. Melbourne
is such a vibrant and multicultural city. What’s not to
love?
