Dear Guest,

Attacks on Indian students in Australia have attracted wide media attention. I have been as deeply disturbed by these reports as I am to see the responses which conclude that Australians are racist. I would like to take this opportunity to share my views on this important topic.

I do not believe the attacks were racially motivated. Crimes such as these are committed by cowardly or disturbed people that target people based on their vulnerability, often at random, and usually to steal mobile phones, iPods or other portable valuables. This vulnerability increases when someone is new to a city and working or socialising late at night, as many students do, regardless of gender or race.

Aussie Word of the Month
Bogan - A person who is not 'with it' in terms of behaviour and appearance, and hence perceived as not being ‘one of us'. An uncultured and unsophisticated person.

Aussie words in action:
Kylie Mole a schoolgirl character in the Australian television program The Comedy Company, used the word to disparage those she disliked: "A bogan is a person that you just don't bother with. Someone who wears their socks the wrong way or has the same number of holes in both legs of their stockings.”

Living the Aussie dream
"It can be a very stressful procedure and mistakes can be made, which is why I got help from professionals to assist me…well done guys!"
