Aussie Surprise of the Month
The Electric Drill

Today, every want-to-be handyman can own a sophisticated electric hand drill for just a few dollars. The wide variety of such drills all trace their origins back to 19th century Melbourne.

Scottish born Arthur James Arnot was the first electrical engineer of the Melbourne city council, appointed in 1891. He designed and managed the Spencer Street power station. Most significantly, Artie also invented and patented the world's first electric drill on 20 August 1889 while he was an employee of the Union Electric Company in Melbourne. His invention was designed primarily to drill rock and to dig coal.
