Skilled Aussie success story.
Vili Milisits, Pie Manufacturer
Vili Milisits is the man behind the highly successful
South Australian company, Vili's cakes and pastries. He
came to Australia as a migrant from Hungary.
Trying to convince the gourmands and gastronomes of
Europe of the enjoyment in devouring a humble Aussie
meat pie could be a tough ask.
That, however, is exactly what Vili's, is set to try as
it uses the recession to launch a pie assault on palates
from Russia to the fans at the lucrative Premier League
circuit in England.
The gourmet pie maker who, two years, ago attempted to
take on the hot dog-loving U.S. market with mixed
success, now has appointed a European manager to lead a
drive into Europe that is experiencing a boom in
fast-food sales.
UK sales manager Josh Farmer said about 2500 Vili's pies
were being eaten each weekend in home games at the
Fulham football club ground in London but distribution
was being set up elsewhere. "It's hard because there are
a lot of meat pie companies here, a lot of pie companies
in general but we think we've got something different so
we are giving it a crack and getting out there and
trying some sales," Mr. Farmer said.
In Bulgaria, the high-quality nature of Australian
produce largely free of artificial additives is being
used as a marketing tool as Vili's products look set to
be distributed through supermarkets and even fast-food
vending machines that are popular in that country.
In the UK mini-Vili's meat pies, sell at corporate box
sporting functions, and have enjoyed success but now,
Vili Milisits’ daughter Alison will liaise with a baker
in Kent, England, to create a chicken balti pie to
appeal to British soccer fans' tastes.
