The best beaches under the sun
Some beaches, like Bondi in Sydney, City Beach in Perth, St Kilda/Elwood in Melbourne - not to mention Queensland’s Gold and Sunshine Coasts - are packed with tourists and locals having fun on every hot day.
However, take care, because - like all major bodies of water everywhere - the sea can turn nasty very quickly.
On holidays and weekends, most popular beaches are patrolled by well-equipped, thoroughly trained volunteer surf lifesavers. Many also have paid Lifeguards. If these guardians aren't on the beach, it’s smarter to stay out of the sea. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the fun and avoid the dangers:
- Don't go in the surf if you can't swim.
- Learn to swim. It's fun and it helps you stay alive in the water.
- Only swim on patrolled beaches, between the red and yellow flags.
- If you have children with you, keep a close eye on them.
- Learn what a rip is and how to recognise it, before one drags you out to sea.
- NEVER swim in the surf alone (we lost a perfectly good Prime Minister that way).
- When in doubt, ask the surf patrol, or check with local authorities about beach and surf safety.
- Use a sun protection product and wear clothes appropriate to the weather and your skin. Nothing stuffs up a good day like a bad sunburn.
