A town like Hamilton

Hamilton is a prosperous city of about 10,000 in western Victoria, at the intersection of the Glenelg, Hamilton and Henty Highways, 300 kilometres (186 mi) west of the state capital, Melbourne. Hamilton is in the heart of the first area to be colonised, in what became the Colony of (and later, the State of) Victoria.

Hamilton was built near the border of three traditional tribal territories: the Gunditjamara land that stretches south to the coast, the Tjapwurong land to the northeast and the Buganditj territory to the west. Hamilton claims to be the "Wool Capital of the World", based on its strong current and historical links to sheep grazing which, with agriculture, are the primary industries in the surrounding shire, the area producing as much as 15% of Australia's total wool clip.

Inside the city of Hamilton the majority of employment is provided by the retail industry (20%) and the Health and Community Services sector (14.5%).

In the year to April 2008, the median price of houses sold in Hamilton was $AU196,750. There are many sporting clubs and leagues in the Hamilton area, including Australian rules football. Netball, hockey, basketball, baseball, cricket and soccer are other popular sports in the town. Hamilton has a large Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre that contains four basketball courts, a twenty-metre indoor swimming pool and a large gym.

Hamilton also has excellent schools including Hamilton and Alexandra College, Monivae College and Bainbridge College.
