Relocating to Australia Finding a job
Next to a visa, our clients consistently tell us that employment is the biggest thing they want to get sorted out when migrating to Australia.
It makes a lot of sense. You’ve heard about the wonderful lifestyle and opportunities for years, but for many people, the security of a good job with a solid wage is critical in setting up a new life down-under. Some lucky people may not have to worry about finding employment after they arrive, but for those that do…where do you start?
Here is a list of tips to help you along the way:
- Ask yourself: what level of income do I need to live the lifestyle I am trying to achieve? This may require some basic budgeting and knowledge of costs in Australia.
- Decide on what occupation/industry you want to work in that will give you not just the income you’re after, but the highest level of happiness and satisfaction. Are you looking to work in a similar area, or, are you considering a move into a completely new industry?
- Be realistic in your expectations. It can be very competitive to find work in some industries, so make sure you’re prepared. An up-to-date curriculum vitae is critical and don’t be afraid to research interview techniques and practice.
- The search begins! Once you know what you want, you can then move forward with a lot more confidence. Naturally, make sure you have your visa organised, or at least underway. We will provide you with a list of online resources for the search at the end of this article, but many people forget about the “hidden” job market. Start to contact some of the companies you may like to work for and start networking. You may have family and friends in Australia already who can assist with this.
- There are many professional industry associations in Australia. Don’t be afraid to contact them and ask lots of questions and ask them for advice on how best to secure employment.
